Nancy Gildart MFA Thesis Work

The multipurpose room — located in schools, union halls, public libraries, places of worship — is where people begin to change things. Groups of people meet here for many reasons, but there's always a reason. Maybe it's to organize a neighborhood watch or a protest. Maybe it's to counsel the grieving or support victims of violence. Perhaps it's to discuss a book or sing a song. But it's not just to hang out. There are many places to hang out that are much more comfortable.

Over time, Girl Scouts share chairs with Alcoholics Anonymous who share with the D.A.R. who share with the N.A.A.C.P. who share with the Confectioners Union who share with ACT-UP who share with the Knights of Columbus who share with B'nai B'rith.

The chairs in the multipurpose room are hard, the lighting stark. Relationships can be prickly. Some individuals may be thinking of personal gain instead of the good of the community.

Working together is often uncomfortable.
